hyundai ioniq leasing electric car

The Hyundai Ioniq. It’s a green car you can have in three states of electrification: a hybrid model with a petrol engine combined with an electric motor, a plug-in hybrid – that’s basically the same as the hybrid but with a bigger battery that you can charge externally for more range – and a pure electric vehicle (EV).

I recently took out the full electric version of the Ioniq (mid range) for a test drive and feel that it will be a popular electric vehicle available for business leasing and personal contract hire.

One of the benefits is low or even zero CO2 emissions, which means cheap company car tax, and the ability to run on electric power alone. And, thanks to an update in 2019, both the plug-in hybrid and fully electric models can travel even further on zero-emissions battery power.

Underneath the car it is closely related to the Kia Niro and that car was rated the WhatCar of the year in 2019.

What I like about the Hyundai Ioniq:

  • Very smooth drive.
  • Top of the range performance offers 305ps.
  • Mid range offers 230 miles of range.
  • Looks are different compared to most of others cars and there is a height advantage for this type of car.
  • Comfortable seats.
  • Battery charger 10 – 80% on a ultra fast charger in 18 minutes. Normal charger will take around an hour.
  • Good pace but the higher performance will do 0-60 in around 5.2 seconds.
  • Not too much road noise compared to some other models.
  • Regenerative braking is not as bad compared to some other EV models.
  • Lane departure system is included.
  • Good acceleration for the car based on the price point.
  • Good visibility all round.
  • The look and design of the car.
  • Folding mirrors & door handles.
  • Extra storage under the bonnet.
  • Electric tail lift.
  • Power external objects e.g. toaster if required! (domestic socket can be plugged in)
  • Good legroom in the back and front of the car.
  • Good build quality.
  • Heated seats & steering wheel.
  • Reversing camera.
  • Apple Play & Android Auto is included.
  • Battery warranty of 8 years and 125,000 miles.

What I don’t like about the Hyundai Ioniq:

  • Screens are different compared to other models and can take a bit of time to get used to.
  • A lot of controls are touch screen based.

Business customers are enquiring more and more about Electric Car Leasing and the benefit in kind for 2021 is only 1% (due to increase to 2% in 2022).  Businesses can also write off 100% in the cost of their vehicle on their tax returns.  Other benefits are the savings on fuel, reduction in ongoing maintenance costs compared to normal combustion engines.

I would note to anyone considering this car it is bigger than it looks, it would be bigger than a VW Golf which if you are looking at pictures you would be deceived to thinking it is a similar size.

Final thoughts:

I do think that the Hyundai Ioniq will be a popular choice for a lot of people but when you go to the top of the range models you are entering into a similar cost to Audi Q4 E-Tron and some Tesla’s.  Therefore, I would recommend sticking to the mid-range models which are priced more competitively.
