The level of improvement in the materials and styling of the new Octavia is great to see.  I recently took out the VRS Octavia and as you can see in the video above Skoda have improved their game!

The VRS comes with all of the technology that you expect from a new family car with a touchscreen infotainment system, LED dials and even a suede/Alcantara dash.

The new Octavia may have gone up in price a bit but it is easy to see where the money is and it can easily compete with the others in the same class.

On the Road

When it comes to driving like all hybrids it starts off in Electric mode. You can choose to use fuel or battery but it is best to leave it to the car to choose.  Under real life driving conditions you would get around 25 miles of battery only driving range compared to the quoted 35 miles.

With the sports suspension and larger alloys you can notice more road noise and a firmer ride.  The VRS will do 0-60 in around 7 seconds and at 245PS which compared to the SE Tech at 204PS there is not a massive improvement in performance with the VRS.  The difference when it comes to a SE Tech compared to a VRS will be with the reduction in BIK tax from 11% for a VRS to around 7% for the SE models.

The overall driving experience from the Skoda Octavia is excellent and I did not notice much of a change going from the electric to petrol power.  A lot of my customers who have taken out a Skoda for a test drive have a positive driving experience with them.

Performance

The overall performance when using the paddles is an improvement over automatic mode. The problem is that driving any car in sport mode you will notice more agressive gear changes and higher revs would be more irritating that just normal mode.  This applies to all automatic or auto performance cars, not just Skoda's.

The battery performance on the test drive did seem to stick to the mileage claimed and that was even when pushing the car on more than you would on a normal drive.

Overall a great driving car with more than enough performance for what you can use as a daily driver for work or transporting the family around!

Technology

The latest Skoda Octavia comes with all of the normal functionality that you have come to expect such as front and rear sensors, Apple & Android functionality but also the latest infotainment systems.  These control not only audio and telelphone but also climate control and the settings of the car such as whether to use battery or petrol only or a combined approach.

The one thing I would note which applies to a lot of modern cars is that controlling fan speed and temperature through a touch controlled screen is more distracting than turning a dial while you are driving.

The car comes with sat nav but a reversing camera is an added extra option.

As I have mentioned before the build quality is a marked improvement over the previous ones.

Conclusion

An excellent car all round, well manufactured using quality components as you would expect from the Volkswagen Audi group that the Skoda is part of.  The SE Tech, SEL and VRS cars are at the higher end of the range.

The VRS comes with styling improvements over a standard Octavia, privacy glass at the rear, 19" alloys, wider blackend out grill, red callipers, blackened out trims also help the appearance.  Comfortable and atttractive quitled seats also help.  As with all Octavia's there is plenty of room for everyone including the rear passengers.
